The end of the school year is fast approaching... I'm not sure about you but I'm feeling a mixture of sadness, nostalgia, awe at how quickly another year has passed, and the burning question:
'But HOW am I going to entertain them for six weeks?'
If you also have an overwhelming sense of dread and panic at how you're going to stop your business from skidding to a grinding halt, or even worse, disappointing clients or customers - fear not!
I've pulled together a quick and easy read with some of my top tips to stop you from feeling as though you're being pulled in all directions and not actually achieving anything, and to help you stay productive but also be present:
Adjust your working hours
Are you an early bird or a night owl? During the school holidays I break my working day into chunks...as I'm most definitely a morning person, I make sure I'm at my desk from 7am - 9am every day to tackle the most important tasks, then I break to do something fun with the family for the morning, then back to work while they have lunch and downtime, then back to work for a few hours at the end of the day.
This really works for me to feel like I'm giving both areas the time and attention they need.
Write lists like you've never done before!
Run your life with military precision!
Every evening during school holidays, I write a list for the next day with a work column and a home column. Everything that's got to be done the next day is highlighted. That way, I don' t feel like a huge failure if I don't manage to get everything done on my list, but know I've focused on the essentials.
And sometimes, just ticking off the essentials is enough.
By committing to what you know has to be done, you will be far more likely to achieve your goals, and more importantly won't feel overwhelmed - it's just a case of working through one by one.
It takes a village
Have you got some other mums in your network that can take turns with childcare? Any relatives you can bribe to take them out for ice cream for a few hours?
This is the time to be savvy and get as much help as you can. Whether it's paying someone to do your ironing for the summer so there's one less job to do, or getting a VA to do some of your tasks such as your social media, outsourcing might just be your secret weapon to surviving the holidays.
There are loads of ways you can work smarter to maximise your productivity:
It's good to talk
People are generally pretty kind, so I let my clients know that I my working habits will be a little different for a few weeks, but it won't affect my service to them. People are much happier if they know, and many are in the same situation or have been previously. Honesty is always the best policy.
Be kind to yourself
Arguably the most important! Juggling is HARD! Celebrate every win!
In September you'll be back to normal productivity and miss the energy and noise of having a houseful in the summer, so celebrate every win for yourself and pat yourself on the back for being a multi-tasking ninja!
